Second Beef Check Off Not Sitting Well With Some Producers

Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack’s plan for going forward with a second beef check off isn’t sitting well with some producers. Friday, USDA announced it’s taking producer comments on a second beef check off program that calls for a dollar a head assessment that would run concurrently with the present one. Iowa Cattlemen’s Association President Ed) Greiman says he’s in favor of adding a dollar but doesn’t like the way USDA is proceeding with this second plan.
Greiman says he doesn’t want USDA determining how check off funds are spent, that it should be up to the Cattlemen’s Beef Board.
The second beef check off plan is set to appear in the Federal Register today and producers may submit comments on line at regulations.gov.
