SDSU Women Hit Century Mark

With six players scoring in double figures, the South Dakota State University women’s basketball team recorded a 101-66 Summit League victory over Omaha Thursday night at Frost Arena.

South Dakota State improved to 12-6 overall and 3-2 in league play while Omaha fell to 5-11, 0-4.

 

The Jackrabbits, who scored a season-high 51 points in the first half, was led by senior forward Mariah Clarin (Princeton, Minn.) with a game-high 22 points. Also scoring in double figures were: sophomore forward Chynna Stevens (Clark) 14, sophomore guard Kerri Young (Mitchell) 13, senior guard Megan Waytashek (Lino Lakes, Minn.) 12, sophomore forward Clarissa Ober (Glencoe, Minn.) 11 and freshman guard Macy Miller (Mitchell) 10.

 

Waytashek led the way with six assists while Clarin and Miller each snared nine rebounds.

 

South Dakota State last scored 101 points Feb. 27, 2012. The last time the Jackrabbits had six players score in double figures was against Utah Valley, Nov. 12, 2010. The Jacks tied a Frost Arena record with 39 field goals. They also grabbed a season-best 25 offensive rebounds.

 

Remy Davenport led Omaha with 22 points.

 

The Jackrabbits held a 22-20 lead after a three-point field goal by Omaha’s Felicia Anderson with 9:22 left in the first half. Seven different players combined to lead South Dakota State on an 18-3 run. Senior guard Rachel Walters (Sioux Falls) capped the run with a three-point field goal for a 40-23 lead with 4:30 remaining.

 

South Dakota State pushed the lead to 30 points, 73-43, on a basket by Young with 12:21 to play. The Jackrabbits cracked the 100-point mark when freshman forward Tiffaney Flaata (Savage, Minn.) scored with 61 seconds remaining.

 

SDSU plays at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion at 2 p.m. Saturday.
