Despite a career-high 23 points by freshman guard Macy Miller, the South Dakota State University women’s basketball team suffered a 77-75 nonconference loss to Green Bay Wednesday night at Frost Arena.
The Jacks, now 6-3 overall, also got 14 points from sophomore guard Kerri Young (Mitchell) and 10 points from senior guard Megan Waytashek (Lino Lakes, Minnesota). Young also recorded five assists while Miller had a game-high two blocked shots.
Green Bay, now 7-2, were led by Mehryn Kraker’s 17 points and 7 rebounds. Tesha Buck and Kaili Lukan added 14 and 11 points, respectively.
Lukan made two free throws with 1:52 remaining to tie the game at 70. Buck and Kraker scored back-to-back layups to give the Phoenix a 74-70 lead with 47.5 seconds remaining. After Kraker made the first of two free throws, Miller drove the court and scored a conventional three-point play with 27.5 seconds to play.
Lukan again made only one of two foul shots to give Green Bay a 76-73 lead. After grabbing an offensive rebound, Young was fouled. She made two free throws. Buck then made one of two free throws, setting up the Jacks for a potential game-tying shot, which went awry at the buzzer.
South Dakota State hosts Middle Tennessee State Monday at 7 p.m. at Frost Arena.
