South Dakota State women’s basketball head coach Aaron Johnston announced Monday that Tagyn (Tay-gan) Larson will join the Jackrabbits in 2016-17.
Larson, who played five games for the University of Iowa this past season, will sit out the 2016-17 season due to NCAA transfer rules.
A former Sioux Falls Roosevelt High School product, Larson becomes the fourth top-100 national recruit on the SDSU roster. She was the 100th-best player and 15th-best wing in the Class of 2015 according to ESPN HoopGurlz.
Larson was a four-time all-state, all-city and all-conference honoree for the Riders. As a senior, she averaged 17 points, 8 rebounds, 3.8 blocks and 2.0 assists per game while shooting 47.6 percent from the field and 82 percent from the foul line. Larson was also a 2015 South Dakota Miss Basketball finalist and a 2015 Argus Leader First Five member. The 6-foot-2 forward holds the career records for blocks (252) and rebounds (634) at Roosevelt and scored 1,038 career points.
As a junior, Larson averaged 16 points and 8 rebounds, collected 69 blocks, while shooting 51 percent from the field and 80 percent from the free throw line. In her sophomore season, she averaged 12 points and 8 rebounds, blocked 90 shots while leading Roosevelt to a conference title.
Larson was also a standout in volleyball for Roosevelt, earning all-state, all-conference and all-city honors.
South Dakota State won its seventh Summit League Tournament title and advanced to the Round of 32 at the 2016 NCAA Tournament. The Jackrabbits finished 27-7.
