Following harvest this year, growers hope to be able to do their fall weed control applications for next season. SDSU Extension Weeds Field Specialist Gared Shaffer says a burn down treatment is recommended.

He says two major problem weeds producers have to do deal with in eastern and central South Dakota are kochia and water hemp.

Shaffer says a burn down works is effective on kochia if farmers are rotating into corn and with soybeans a residual herbicide product like valor works well.

Shaffer says another weed that is prevalent in eastern South Dakota is mares tail. He says they’ve also been working to prevent palmar amaranth, although that’s not been a major problem yet.
