Quarterbacks from South Dakota State and South Dakota were honored this week by the Missouri Valley Football Conference for their performances on Saturday.
South Dakota State quarterback Taryn Christion has been named Missouri Valley Football Conference Offensive Player of the Week for his record-setting performance in leading the nationally ranked Jackrabbits to a 45-39 win Oct. 8 at Southern Illinois.
A sophomore from Sioux Falls, Christion completed 32-of-51 pass attempts in the game en route to a school-record 466 passing yards. He also set a Jackrabbit single-game record for total offense with 475 yards (466 passing, 9 rushing) as SDSU improved to 2-0 in the league standings and 3-2 overall. Christion matched his career high with five touchdown passes and connected with eight different receivers on the night as he upped his season total for touchdown passes to 20 against only one interception.
USD’s Chris Streveler is the league’s Newcomer of the Week after he passed for 182 yards, ran for 128 yards and accounted for three touchdowns in South Dakota’s 28-25 win against 11th-ranked UNI Saturday inside the DakotaDome.
Streveler averaged 10.7 yards per carry against the nation’s fourth-best run defense and averaged 22.7 yards per completion. He took the third play of the game 69 yards for a score and a 7-0 lead. He also threw touchdowns of 75 and 29 yards to Tacari Carpenter, and used a 63-yard bomb to Alonge Brooks to set up a 10-yard touchdown run by Trevor Bouma.
