The new Swine Education and Research Facility at South Dakota State University will be dedicated in Brookings Saturday. SDSU Extension Swine Specialist Dr. Bob Thaler says the unit consists of three buildings designed to advance Extension, teaching and research efforts. The first part of the unit focuses on sow reproduction and features an elevated hallway for public observation of gestation and other production activities.
The second portion of the unit is a wean to finish barn and Thaler says this is where nutrition and engineering research will be conducted.
The third aspect of the unit is a 1,200 head commercial wean to finish barn which is located 12 miles south of Brookings.
The dedication begins around 10:30 am with tours, the program will be held at noon with a pork BBQ to follow.
