South Dakota State University free safety Nick Farina was named Sunday as the Missouri Valley Football Conference Defensive Player of the Week and kicker Miles Bergner of South Dakota is the Special Teams Player of the Week.
A sophomore from Phoeniz, Farina tallied a career-high 10 tackles and returned an interception 43 yards for a touchdown in South Dakota State’s 30-23 win on Nov. 14. His interception return capped a 20-point fourth quarter for the Jackrabbits and proved to be the decisive score in the South Dakota Showdown Series game. Farina, who shares the team lead with two interceptions, broke up another pass as the Jackrabbits remained undefeated on the road this season.
Bergner made two 45-yard field goals, a 50-yard field goal and scored 11 points against South Dakota State Saturday. It was the second time Bergner has hit from at least 50 yards this season and three times he’s made good from 45. In addition, Bergner netted 40.8 yards per punt and pinned the Jacks back on their 2, 11, 12, and 22 with his four punts.
