South Dakota State’s basketball teams split a pair of Sunday games away from Frost Arena.
The South Dakota State men went into the locker room of Sunday’s game at the Sanford Pentagon tied at 31 with FGCU, but the Eagles used a 10-0 run to open the second half to secure a 71-58 win over the Jackrabbits in front of a sold out crowd of 3,250.
Senior Mariah Clarin recorded her fourth career double-double to help the South Dakota State women’s basketball team defeat UNLV, 65-59, and win the UNLV Lady Rebel Round-Up Sunday in Cox Pavilion.
The SDSU men shot 42 percent in the first half, 13 of 31, and went 3 for 10 from long range.
That all changed in the second half though, as the Eagles made their first three shots out of the break, including a pair of triples in the opening 10-0 run, and while they cooled off a bit, they shot 52 percent in the frame, 13 of 25, and went 4 for 5 from deep.
SDSU shot 22.6 percent in the second half, 7 of 31, and went 1 for 10 from 3-point range.
Deondre Parks led all players in the game with 18 points. Cody Larson finished with 14 points and tied for game-high honors with 10 rebounds for his third double-double of the season.
Clarin (Princeton, Minn.), who was named the tournament MVP, scored a career-high 22 points and grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds. Senior Megan Waytashek (Lino Lakes, Minn.) recorded 16 points and sophomore Kerri Young (Mitchell) chipped in 11 points.
The Jackrabbits, 4-2, led the entire game until UNLV used a 16-0 run to take a 50-43 lead with 6:20 to play. A Young three-pointer at the 5:54 mark ended the Lady Rebels’ run and started a 20-6 SDSU run to seal the win. UNLV, 3-3, got as close as 61-59 with 42 seconds to go, but Waytashek sank four free throws in the closing seconds.
