South Dakota State University wide receiver Jake Wieneke was honored Sunday as Missouri Valley Football Conference Newcomer of the Week, one day after helping lead the Jackrabbits to a come-from-behind victory over Missouri State.
A redshirt freshman from Maple Grove, Minnesota, Wieneke recorded his second consecutive and third 100-yard receiving game of the season, setting career highs with eight catches for 183 yards and three touchdowns in South Dakota State’s 32-28 victory Oct. 11 in the annual Hall of Fame Game.
Wieneke’s touchdowns covered 78, 10 and 26 yards, the last of which came in the fourth quarter.
He became the first Jackrabbit player since 2009 to record three receiving touchdowns in a game, while his yardage total was the sixth-most in program history and the most by a Jackrabbit receiver in the Division I era.
Earlier in the week, Wieneke was named to the initial watch list for the Jerry Rice Award, which is presented by the Sports Network to the top freshman in the Football Championship Subdivision.
The nationally ranked Jackrabbits return to action Saturday (Oct. 18) at Northern Iowa. Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m. at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
