South Dakota State saw a second-half surge fall short Monday in the opening round of the Cayman Islands Classic, losing 77-65 to Wyoming at John Gray Gymnasium.
SDSU will face Iowa in the consolation bracket Tuesday morning at 11 a.m. on WNAX after the Hawkeyes lost the tourney opener to Louisiana 80-71.
The Jackrabbits (3-2) shot 37 percent from the field and hit nine 3-pointers. State got to the free line 30 times and hit 22 of them, but was hurt by 23 turnovers that led to 31 Wyoming points.
Reed Tellinghuisen led the Jacks with 16 points and six rebounds, while Mike Daum and Brandon Key had 10 points each. Daum posted a game-high nine boards on the day while David Jenkins Jr. paced the team with four assists.
Iowa(3-1) dug itself an early hole while trailing 37-17 at halftime of its game.
