The outbreak of African Swine Fever in China that’s been spreading needs to be on the minds of America’s pork producers. SDSU Extension Veterinarian Dr. Russ Daly says pork producers need to monitor that situation closely as well as their feed sources and to practice good biosecurity as there is no vaccine for the disease.

He says if a producer notices anything unusual in their herds they should report that to their veterinarian immediately.

Daly says the U.S. has one advantage in that they have several animal disease diagnostic labs in place that can track any outbreaks and the new SDSU lab is up and operating in Brookings.

Daly says it’s also important that pork producers make sure their feed suppliers also have good biosecurity and food safety practices in their operations.
