The cold snap currently raging across the Northern Plains is expected to drop temperatures to as low as 20 below zero this weekend. The longevity of it is causing more work for livestock producers. SDSU Extension Veterinarian Dr. Russ Daly says it’s critical to take care of vulnerable animals, particularly calves.

He says it’s also important to pay attention to some vulnerable animals producers don’t often think about and that’s the bulls.

Daly says it’s also advised to make sure livestock are getting the proper nutrition during this cold spell.

Daly says make sure that there’s a continual source of water available for livestock and that that water has been thawed out. He says for animals indoors producers need to make sure heaters and fans are working properly.
