Above normal temperatures this spring have already caused some livestock deaths in herds in the region. SDSU Extension Veterinarian Dr. Russ Daly says some fed cattle were lost with 100-plus temperatures and humidity over the weekend as they weren’t acclimated yet.
Daly is also concerned since many calves went through a tough spring and aren’t in the best health status. So, he says they may be more susceptible to heat stress.
He says the death losses are a reminder for producers to prepare their herds for heat stress by providing extra water, shade and even changing rations.
Insurance will not cover the livestock losses, but producers may qualify for the Livestock Indemnity Program and should contact their FSA office for details.
