The COVID 19 pandemic has added stress to an already depressed ag economy including pork producers. With that, there’s been several shutdowns either temporary or long term for processing plants in the Northern Plains. That’s caused a backup of hogs at pork operations. SDSU Extension Swine Specialist Dr. Bob Thaler says one way to deal with that backup is to put hogs into a holding pattern until processing plants re-open.

He says pork producers use what’s called an in and out procedure with their animals. Thaler says that’s to ensure the health of the animals and a schedule needs to be followed to get those hogs to market.

Thaler says if pork producers need help in dealing with those backed up animals, he and his colleagues are available at SDSU to offer advice for what might fit their operation.

Thaler also says it’s important producers and their workers keep safe during this pandemic and to make sure there’s a back up plan in place so they can continue the WE CARE Principles of keeping animals healthy.
