Farmers and ranchers are facing increased stress with the multitude of challenges tied to disastrous weather, low commodity prices and even the trade war. SDSU Extension Mental Health Specialist Andrea Bjornstad says this is leading to more depression and suicide rates are higher among young rural males.

She says there are many warning signs of depression and even suicide among farmers.

Bjornstad says it can be difficult to intervene or help farmers as they’re generally proud and independent individuals.

However, there are many resources available to assist farmers and ranchers and their families with increased stress and depression.
