The South Dakota State women’s soccer team will face second-seeded North Carolina in the first round of the 2014 NCAA Tournament Friday at 4 p.m. CT in Chapel Hill, N.C.
The Jackrabbits (10-7-2) earned their second berth in the College Cup by besting Denver in the Summit League Tournament final Saturday. After Nicole Hatcher tied the game at one in the last 31 seconds of regulation, South Dakota State topped the Pioneers, 5-4, on penalty kicks.
In 2008, the Jackrabbits made their first NCAA Tournament appearance. Playing in St. Paul, Minn., they upset fourth-seeded Colorado, 1-0, in the opening round before falling to Minnesota, 2-0.
The Tar Heels (12-3-2) earned an at-large bid to this year’s tournament. North Carolina boasts an all-time record of 118-9-3 in tournament action and has claimed a NCAA-record 21 crowns. Their last title came in 2012.
On the other side of South Dakota State’s bracket, Colorado hosts Brigham Young Saturday at 1 p.m. CT.
