The new Swine Education and Research unit was dedicated at South Dakota State University on Saturday. SDSU Extension Swine Specialist Dr. Bob Thaler says the new $7.4 million state-of-the-art facility consists of three barns focusing on the entire swine production system. The first is a sow intensive education barn.
The unit will promote teaching and cutting edge research for the industry and that’s why the South Dakota Pork Producers Council supported the project from inception, according to President Ryan Storm.
Alcester pork producer and National Pork Board Treasurer Steve Rommereim agrees the production and nutrition research will help advance his operation.
Hannah Walkes, President of Pipestone Veterinary Clinic, says they’re thrilled to have an incubator for the next generation of pork professionals.
SDSU President Barry Dunn says the unit will add value to both swine and grain production in the state.
Dunn is also excited about the observation area that will allow the public to learn about swine production.
The new unit was supported by allied industry and farm groups from several states. Dave Preisler, Executive Director of the Minnesota Pork Producers Association says it was a great investment for them.
The unit was also supported by the South Dakota and Minnesota Soybean Councils, the Iowa Pork Producers Association and a long list of businesses and individuals.
