The new $6-million SDSU cow calf teaching and research unit was dedicated on Friday with a standing room only crowd of supporters. SDSU President Barry Dunn says the state-of-the art facility will put the University on the map.
SDSU Animal Science Professor Cody Wright says the monoslope barn includes 48-individual electronic feeders which will aid in nutrition research.
Students and producers will also receive hands-on training on low stress cattle handling in the new working unit according to SDSU Animal Science Department Head Joe Cassady.
And Interim Ag Dean Daniel Scholl says a new classroom will provide additional personnel training opportunities for students and outreach for industry and producers.
The unit also features a calving area, a modern manure management system and paddocks for rotational grazing for the 220-cow herd. The project was supported by industry and many individual producers.
