Emily Campbell repeated as champion in the 200-yard breaststroke Saturday night, helping lift South Dakota State to a second-place finish in the women’s division of the Summit League Swimming and Diving Championships.
A senior from Aberdeen, Campbell clocked an NCAA B-cut time of 2 minutes, 13.34 seconds to lead a trio of Jackrabbits in the event final. Freshman Kristin Erf placed fourth in 2:19.03, with Kayce Smith finishing seventh in 2:22.15.
The Jackrabbits were able to overtake IUPUI for second place in the team standings with a strong showing in the 200 butterfly, where three other Jackrabbits qualified for the finals. Freshman Alexandra Yaeger place second and broke the longest-standing record in the program by posting a time of 2:03.49. The previous mark of 2:05.50 was set by Mallory Onisk in 2009.
Also in the 200 butterfly, Trina Young placed seventh in 2:10.25, with Emily Rosenthal taking eighth in 2:10.60.
Earlier in the day, Rosenthal placed seventh in the 1,650 freestyle, while Kendra Hinton was the top Jackrabbit finisher in the event with a sixth-place time of 17:28.24.
Other event finalists for SDSU included Cassie Hendricks, who finished sixth in the 200 backstroke (2:04.03), and senior Nicole Grimit , who turned in a seventh-place time of 52.24 seconds in the 100 freestyle.
The Jackrabbits closed the meet by placing fourth in the 400 freestyle relay as the quartet of Abby Zenner, Erf, Julia Bodnaruk and Grimit teamed for a time of 3:28.53.
Denver repeated as Summit League champion with 956 points, followed by the Jackrabbits with 586 and IUPUI with 555.
In the men’s division, SDSU recorded a third-place showing with 563 points, finishing behind Denver (1,099) and IUPUI (604).
Diver Connor Florand was the top individual finisher for the Jackrabbits on Saturday, turning in a runner-up finish on the 3-meter board with 318.60 points. Noah Batenhorst took sixth with 260.50 points, followed by Parker Brown with 230.25.
Florand also placed fifth in the 1-meter competition during the championships and SDSU’s Jennifer Botsch was honored as Summit League Men’s Diving Coach of the Year.
In the swimming events, the Jackrabbits had three top-eight finishers in both the 1,650 freestyle and 200 backstroke. Chris Angerhofer placed fifth in the 1,650 with an overall time of 16:02.98, but his 1,000-yard split of 9:33.41 set a new school record. Blake Yeager, whose record Angerhofer surpassed, finished sixth in 16:08.71, while Matthew Carpenter took eighth in 16:18.64.
The backstroke trio was led by Daniel Jacobson, who finished fifth in 1:50.80, followed by Alex McLain in sixth in 1:50.94 and Carpenter in eighth with a time of 1:55.99.
For good measure, the SDSU men ended the meet on a high note by setting a new school record in the 400 freestyle relay. The foursome of Ben Bolinske, Yeager, Christopher Rumrill and Jacobson clocked a time of 3:01.77 en route to a third-place finish. Bolinske, who finished fifth in the 100 freestyle earlier in the evening with a time of 45.33 seconds, broke his own school record in the event leading off the relay with a split of 44.96 seconds.
