The ground breaking was held Friday for the new SDSU Swine Unit in Brookings. SDSU Ag Dean Barry Dunn says the current facility was outdated and in dire need of replacement. He says they’re excited with how the state and private industry came together to fund the project.
SDSU President David Chicoine says the unit will be a game changer for the region’s pork producers.
South Dakota pork producers, including past council president Dave Uttecht, worked tirelessly to make the project a reality. He says he’s most excited about the observation area that will allow much needed outreach in agriculture.
Construction on the unit will start in the spring with completion early in 2016.
