The United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organization and the European Union Commission of Health and Food Safety have signed a letter of intent to cooperate on tackling the spread of antimicrobial resistance on farms and in food systems. South Dakota Pork Producers Council Executive Director Glenn Muller says there are many misconceptions about the use of antibiotics in livestock feed. However, America’s pork producers use antibiotics responsibly for the treatment of sick animals.
Muller says as part of FDA’s Veterinary Feed Directive, pork producers can’t use antibiotics in feed without a prescription from a vet and must follow federal regulations for any antibiotic use.
He says through proper antibiotic use producers are preserving the technology and ensuring the health of their animals.
In addition to antimicrobial resistance, The EU and FAO also pledged to work closely on food safety and to halve food waste by 2030.
