Governor Dennis Daugaard has proposed shifting some money around in the state budget to allow the Board of Regents to freeze tuition rates at universities for next year.
University of South Dakota President Jim Abbott says while he supports a freeze, they still need money for faculty pay increases….
The Governor proposed shifting about five million dollars for the freeze.
Abbott says having it in the budget proposal is a good endorsement….
Abbott says the tuition freeze, as other states are finding, is temporary at best….
Tuition was also held in place two years ago. Prior to that, there were increases of two to five percent each year.
