Many towns and cities in South Dakota use sales taxes as a major part of their budget, and like the state, are now seeing those revenues fade.

Representative Lee Qualm of Platte says the effects of online sales are spreading rapidly….

Qualm says while Amazon agreed to pay state sales taxes, they don’t really have an idea of how much is coming back…..https://soundcloud.com/wnax-radio/lee-qualm-1005b

Some city officials have suggested looking at new and alternative taxes. Qualm says that will be a very tough sale……

The legislature has defeated several proposals that would have allowed expansion of city sales taxes for specific projects.
