SD Task Force Tracking Prisoners; Looking for Solutions

The number of people in prison in South Dakota continues a slow rise, and a task force is looking into the reasons.
In 2005, there were just over thirty-one hundred prisoners, in 2010 that grew to over thirty-four hundred, and the projection for this year is over thirty-five hundred.
Governor Dennis Daugaard says they believe much of that is tied to drugs………….

A major justice reform bill was passed in 2013 dealing with crimes and sentences. Daugaard says there may need to be adjustments….

Daugaard says he has put together a task force to look at the expanding prison population, and how best to deal with it…

Daugaard says his task force is working with a legislative committee, and Attorney General Marty Jackley on solutions.
