Efforts to have more current and former state officials appear in front of a legislative committee to answer questions about the GEAR UP grant program fell short.
The State-Tribal Relations Committee, meeting in Vermillion, voted five to five on a resolution to subpoena those officials, ending the effort.

Committee Chairman, Senator Troy Heinert of Mission, said the committee didn’t have the authority to issue subpoenas…

Senator Stace Nelson of Fulton challenged that ruling…..

Heinert rejected Nelson’s arguments……

The committee then adjourned without taking any further action.
