The bill increasing the states sales tax will be up for debate in the South Dakota Senate this afternoon.
HB1182 would raise the sales tax a half cent, and use most of the money to increase teacher pay. It passed the House, on the second attempt by one vote.
District 16 republican Senator Bill Shorma of Dakota Dunes says he will vote for the bill….
Shorma says he doesn’t know the chances of the bill in the Senate….
There is some concern about the bill being amended in the Senate, which would mean a trip back to the House. Shorma says each amendment will have to stand on its own…..
About sixty million dollars of the tax increase would go to teacher salaries, with forty million going to property tax relief.
