A bill that would have allowed land owners a cut on property taxes for land near lakes and streams failed to overcome a veto yesterday.
Governor Dennis Daugaard had vetoed the so called “buffer bill” because of concerns about constitutionality and costs.
Senator Billie Sutton of Burke was disappointed by the loss….
Senators approved the veto override, but it failed to get a two thirds majority in the House.
Sutton says the land reclassification was going to be on a voluntary basis…..
Sutton says the change is in line with other changes that have been implemented in property use and taxation….
Sutton would like to see a similar bill return in the future.
