This week, South Dakota legislators approved Senate Bill 68, a measure that prohibits labeling cell cultured protein as meat. The bill, which passed unanimously, reserves the term ‘’meat’’ to be used only for protein harvested from animal carcasses. South Dakota Stockgrowers Association President Gary Deering says that’s positive for livestock producers and consumers.
He says SB 68 was a straight forward measure that was already defined in state law.
Deering says several other states are passing similar legislation and he’s hopeful fake meat labeling will eventually be addressed at the national level.
Deering says those who supported SB 68 aren’t against companies producing cell cultured or lab grown product, they just don’t want it labeled the same as meat from animal carcasses.
