The South Dakota Senate overrode the Governor’s veto of SB136 today. The bill would allow a different type of taxation on fifty foot buffer strips around lakes, streams and rivers. Those strips can help slow runoff into those water bodies.
Bill sponsor, Senator Jim Peterson of Revillo says the effects of runoff and erosion can already be seen…..
There has been criticism of the bill for being too general. Peterson says other agencies can come up with specific rules…
Senator Betty Olson of Prairie City says the state needs to clean up its own streams and lakes…
While the state Senate found the votes to override the Governor’s veto of SB136, the House did not.
Representative Julie Bartling of Gregory said the legislature has made a number of changes to tax rules for property….
Representative Steven McCleerey of Sisseton says the cost to counties would be minimal….
Representative Steve Haugaard of Sioux Falls says most farmers do a pretty good job of protecting their land….
The override received thirty seven yes votes, twenty eight no, with five excused members. The vote fell short of the two thirds needed to override the veto so the bill will not become law.
