Last week the South Dakota State Senate approved House Bill 1007. It appropriates funds for the state to contract with SDSU to study the method to determine ag land production capacity. The bill was sponsored by Representative Mary Duvall of Pierre. She says it’s part of the effort to improve the ag land valuation system.
She says state officials need more reliable and accurate information to continue tweaking the ag land valuation method.
Duvall says there’s another bill moving through the legislature to help improve the definition of what constitutes ag land for valuation purposes.
She says the Ag Land Valuation Task Force also needs to find a better way to determine the value of grassland or non-cropland.
