School districts across the state are running the numbers, trying to see what the impact will be of the Governor’s proposal to raise teacher pay.
Governor Dennis Daugaard has asked legislators to raise the state sales tax a half cent to raise the money needed to increase average pay for teachers to forty eight thousand dollars.
Dan Swartos, Superintendent of the McCook Central School district in Salem says the plan would be a gain for them…
The Governor also proposed a teacher to student ratio of about fifteen to one. Swartos says their district is right on the numbers…..
There may be adjustments to capital outlay spending of school districts. Swartos says while the use that fund, they can live with the proposed changes….
Swartos says their average teacher pay is now about thirty five thousand dollars.
