When Governor Dennis Daugaard proposed a half cent increase in the state sales tax to fund teacher pay increases, he also suggested a change in the formula used to distribute those dollars to school districts.
Some districts get what is called “other revenue”, and that could be from traffic fines, weigh stations and electric utility equipment in the district. The Governor wants that money to revert to the state, and then be distributed equally to all the districts.
Yankton School Superintendent Dr Wayne Kindle says they would support that only if the district gets an overall increase in state aid….
One report shows the Yankton school district would see a nine percent increase under the Governor’s proposals. Kindle says they want more details on that…..
Kindle says that “other revenue” for the district is significant…..
A bill detailing the tax increase and budget details has not yet been introduced into the legislative session.
