While many rural electric cooperatives in South Dakota have been able to hold rate increases stable over the last few years, some outside forces may change that.
Chris Larson is the manager for Clay-Union Electric based in Vermillion.
He says new clean air rules proposed by the Environmental Protection Agency has them worried…..

Larson says the costs of those plants are still on the books….

Larson says paying those off while building new, renewable power sources could force rates much higher.

He says power lines are also a potential problem….

Larson says most utility companies are watching and waiting on this year’s Presidential election.
