While property taxes were not an issue in the 2017 session of the South Dakota legislature, they are sure to come up next year. Several farm groups have been complaining about the rise in valuations and taxes, especially at a time of low commodity prices.

Senator Jason Frerichs of Wilmot has been a member of the property tax oversight committee. He says there are more updates underway……

The legislature made the change from taxes based on land sales to productivity several years ago.

Frerichs says land owners have to watch for changes in assessments and valuations in their county…..

Frerichs says they are watching the conversion of grassland to crops due to the property tax formula….

Frerichs says they will meet several times this year, and may have some suggestions for next years legislature.
