Last week the South Dakota legislature shot down a measure that would have funded and allowed a summer study committee to look more closely at actual land use as it relates to determining property taxes. South Dakota Stock Grower’s Executive Director Silvia Christen is disappointed with the move and says real information is needed to be able to figure out the fairest way to determine property taxes.

Christens says without that information it makes it difficult for lawmakers to tweak the property tax system.

Christen says an actual use based property tax system would be a much more fair assessment of how ag land is being used in South Dakota.
