Updates on technology, livestock health and animal welfare practices will headline the South Dakota Livestock Auction Market Association Convention this weekend in Chamberlain. Executive Director Jerry Voegler says members will get updated on the Animal Identification regulations and look at strategies for preventing cattle lameness.
Voegler says lameness need to be addressed by everyone in the marketing and production system….including truckers and auction markets. He says it can be very costly for cattle producers.
The group will also discuss animal handling. However, Voegler says the barns have had best practices on the books for nearly 25 years and they continue to evolve.
They’ll also be getting a preview of the survey being done by state legislators to revise South Dakota’s corporate farming laws.
