The South Dakota legislature is getting closer to finishing their 2019 session and so far it has been a successful one for agriculture. South Dakota Farm Bureau Lobbyist Mike Held says as the session winds down, they were able to get both the House and Senate to pass sales tax relief with a tax on internet sales and that will be beneficial for farmers and ranchers.

He says the measure made it through House and Senate committees mid-week and passed both chambers on Thursday.

Held says overall, it’s been a good session for agriculture interests this year.

Held says while they were able to convince lawmakers to pass sales tax relief, next session there may be an opportunity to work on a reduction in property taxes.

The legislature has three days of deliberation this week, with the final day on March 29.
