The South Dakota Legislature has set industrial hemp and the meth epidemic as their topics for their summer study committees. South Dakota Farm Bureau lobbyist Mike Held says it’s positive they’re taking an in depth look at industrial hemp as a possible crop for the state’s farmers.
Despite the industrial hemp bill passing both chambers during the regular legislative session, Governor Noem vetoed the bill. Held says he thinks the study committee will be able to answer the Governor’s concerns and come up with a measure that can get passed.
He says it’s also positive lawmakers are studying the meth epidemic as addressing it is one of the priorities for both the American Farm Bureau and National Farmers Union.
Held says Farm Bureau wanted property taxes studied as well and is hoping the full legislative body will take a look at that next session.
