SD Legislature to Decide School Gender Policy

SD Legislature to Decide School Gender Policy

The South Dakota High School Activities Association has been working through policy dealing with transgender students, and where they could be placed in athletics. The association board met this week, but more policy revisions may come in the future.
A legislative committee last week did not pass two measures that would have required transgender people to define their gender by what was entered on their birth certificate.
Senator Bill Van Gerpen of Tyndall is on that committee, and says this is an issue the legislature need to decide…………

Van Gerpen says he supports the birth certificate gender rule………

The Activities Association changed a rule that would allow an independent hearing officer instead of a committee to decide on students requests.
Van Gerpen says the policy request came from school districts………

No students have yet made a request for a sport assignment.
