SD Legislature Passes Financial Oversight Laws

The South Dakota Auditor General has released a report into the GEAR UP program that was handled by the Mid Central Education Cooperative in Platte that was critical of the oversight by the state Department of Education of pass through federal funds.
That cooperative is now the focus of a criminal investigation by Attorney General Marty Jackley.

Representative Mike Stevens of Yankton is Vice Chair of the House Judiciary Committee, and says the legislature has been reworking ethics and oversight laws….

Stevens says while they can pass laws, the targets continue to move….

Stevens says they can always look at other ways to avoid financial mismanagement…

The three people charged in connection with the financial issues at MCEC will make their first court appearance today.
