SD Legislators Outline Summer Study of Corrections Department

One issue South Dakota legislators will study this summer is corrections with a focus on possible construction needs.

Senator Troy Heinert of Mission, a member of the Executive Board, says they need to coordinate with the Corrections Commission….

Heinert says they have had talks about who should serve on the interim committee….

A report on the corrections system recommended building a new prison. Heinert says that will be a difficult issue…..

The Executive Board chose Senator Mike Diedrich of Rapid City to chair the corrections committee with Representative Greg Jamison of Sioux Falls as vice chair.

Other interim committees will study regional jails, juvenile justice and property taxes.
