Governor Dennis Daugaard has signed SB159, a bill that would allow insurance companies to get a tax credit for contributing to organizations that provide educational scholarships.

There was some controversy connected to the bill because it was seen as the state subsidizing private schools.

At a recent District 18 legislative wrap up, Representative Mike Stevens of Yankton says he doesn’t like potential dollars being diverted away from public schools…..

Senator Bernie Hunhoff of Yankton says public dollars already go in a number of directions….

Hunhoff says a small investment like this may pay off for a number of students and families….

Hunhoff says the scholarship money will go directly to students, who then can decide where they want to go school.
