A state task force has decided not to expand protections for petition produced ballot issues.
The Initiative and Referendum Task Force, meeting in Pierre, debated a recommendation that a two thirds majority of the legislature would be needed to overturn an initiated measure.
Senator Reynold Nesiba of Sioux Falls says the proposal would offer more protections to the constitution….

Task Force member Will Mortenson says voters already have ways to change legislative actions…..

Task Force member Linda Lea Viken says ballot issues need the protection……

The proposal, which stemmed from the repeal of IM22, was defeated on a six to seven vote.
The task force will meet again in October.
