The South Dakota legislature’s interim committee on meandered and non meandered waters will be meeting Friday in Pierre to review a draft bill. South Dakota Farmers Union officials say they’ll endorse the bill if some changes are made. President Doug Sombke says the legislature should be able to make the official determination and not the State Department of Natural Resources or Game, Fish and Parks.

Sombke also says the committee needs to look at taxing non meandered lakes equally, because right now each county assesses it differently.

Sombke says the draft bill should also set a quiet zone based upon distances and times of day. It should also have a setback rule based on the distance and type of weapon used by hunters accessing private lands.

The interim committee wants to find a compromise that works for landowners, businesses and sportsmen. A special legislative session could be called in mid-June to deal with the draft legislation.
