An interim committee of the South Dakota legislature is meeting Thursday in Pierre talking about electric service areas.

The “Electric Service in an Annexed Area” committee is trying to find a compromise between rural electric co-ops and municipal electrics over conflicts in service territory.

Public Utilities Commissioner Chris Nelson gave the committee an overview of how the service territories were developed…

Nelson says they also worked with all the utilities to get legal agreements on those boundaries…..

Nelson says that process began in 2008 and was wrapped up earlier this year.

Nelson also reminded the committee that the PUC has no rate authority over municipal or rural electrics….

The committee will also hear from each side in the dispute and take public testimony before deciding on their next step.
