Even though thousands of monarch butterflies are migrating through the area now on their way to Mexico, their overall numbers are shrinking, and plans are underway to address that.
The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Department Commission heard from deputy director Tom Kirschenmann. He says the butterflies we are seeing now are far removed from the ones that left Mexico last spring…..

Kirschenmann says monarch habitat has been disappearing…..

Kirschenmann says they will sponsor a monarch summit next month….

Kirschenmann says a number of states are working together to improve butterfly numbers to keep them from being added to the endangered species list by the US Fish and Wildlife Service.
