The South Dakota House failed to override the Governor’s veto of HB1008, the school gender bill.
Governor Dennis Daugaard vetoed the bill, saying he was concerned about possible legal costs, and that the decisions expressed in the bill could best be made at the local level.
Representative Fred Deutsch of Florence, sponsor of the bill, asked that it be allowed to die…..
Deutsch says he wants to rewrite the bill, and possibly bring it back next year.
Representative Thomas Brunner of Nisland didn’t want to give up on the bill…..
Representative Karen Soli of Sioux Falls says she believes the bill’s sponsors had good intentions….
The vote to override was 36 to 29, well short of the two thirds needed.
