South Dakota Farmers Union members are working to get state lawmakers to override Governor Kristi Noem’s veto of the industrial hemp bill. Farmers Union President Doug Sombke says need to flip three votes in the Senate to get that accomplished.

He can’t understand how Noem could have supported industrial hemp while she was in Congress and then changed her tune as Governor to oppose it.

The Governor said in her veto message that she’s concerned about the industrial hemp bill leading to eventual legalization of recreational marijuana. Sombke says that argument doesn’t make sense and the Governor is beholden to special interest groups.

Legislators have today, tomorrow and March 29 to get any override attempt completed.
