South Dakota Farmers Union members approved policy at their just concluded convention, including a new risk management program. President Doug Sombke says the first major priority is asking the Risk Management Agency to include this new crop insurance option for farmers that would add another tool to their tool box. He says it’s called IMSET or the Inventory Management and Soil Enhancement Tool.
He says IMSET is a program where farmers help themselves, instead of getting federal subsidization for crop insurance premiums.
Sombke says another policy they approved involves asking the EPA to rule on the use of E30 in non-flex fuel vehicles. He says oil companies are claiming it’s illegal to use E30 in those vehicles, but the agency hasn’t ruled on the issue.
Sombke says EPA needs to make a decision and if E30 proponents are wrong, the opponents should take it to court.
